Webinar 2nd June with James Partridge

Timings: 10:30 am - 11:30 am

Guest Speaker: James Partridge

James Partridge is a social entrepreneur, founder of multiple charities and an author. He is currently the Director of Face Equality International which he launched in November 2018. Previously, he was the Founder (in 1992) and was until September 2017, Chief Executive of Changing Faces, the leading UK charity supporting and representing people with disfigurements.

At the age of 18, James was involved in a car fire that resulted in 40% burns to his face and body.  After a period of recovery in intensive care he spent a gap year undergoing reconstructive surgery before going to Oxford University as planned.  During his holidays and third year at Oxford, he underwent further extensive plastic surgery to his face.

After graduating in Politics, Philosophy and Economics James went onto to study an MSc in Medical Demography at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine which in turn led on to academic appointments in health economics at St Thomas’ Hospital and  Guy’s Hospital.

Four years later James’ career path changed as he took up farming and a part-time teaching post in A-level economics in Guernsey.  And it was here, that James realised his unique learnings and personal insights gained during his extensive recovery period should be shared.  His mornings would now be spent in the milking parlour and afternoons spent writing his book ‘Changing Faces:The Challenge of Facial Disfigurement in 1990’.

The book received such a positive response that it lead to the founding of the charity Changing Faces in 1992 which enabled further dissemination of the lessons learnt and to work for the human rights and inclusion of people with disfigurements.

James writes and presents widely on disfigurement, disability, inclusion and social entrepreneurship in the UK and internationally — and achieved an international profile by becoming the first newsreader with a facial disfigurement on any TV news channel, Channel 5, in November 2009.
